Swedish Design Group Smånsk exhibited the table ”Jean Pape” and the chest of drawers ”Haupt”. These are pieces of furniture in a style which they label Neo Neo Rococo.

– Today, there are many examples of Rococo and Baroque designs being brought back in new materials. However, instances of the design itself being updated are yet to come. They are old designs manufactured using new production methods, which is essentially the same as reproduction furniture, according to Martin Pålsson, one of the designers at Smånsk.

For the product design, they were looking for a method which governs the result and where, at the same time, the inspiration plays a considerably smaller roll. All components were to be based on their Neo Rococo originals, but their final designs were to be reached via a contemporary process.

– As simplification appeared to be a natural way of approaching the modern designs, we began by pixelating original blueprints from the Neo Rococo period, says Martin Pålsson. As the resolution was reduced, so were the amounts of components to the ornaments themselves. Subsequently, the pixelated data was converted back into a three-dimensional design. This method results in completely contemporary pieces of furniture with the visual quality of an ornamented style, such as the Neo Rococo.

“Jean Pape” and “Haupt” were exhibited for the first time at the Salone Satellite during the Milan Furniture Fair, where Smånsk showed the world their first products. The members met during their studies and soon decided to launch their best ideas under one name. The group is now looking for manufacturers and exciting international collaborations.
